Family

Born in Gaimen City in the summer of 1988, Jason was the first and (as far as he knows) the only child. His childhood, for the most part, was pretty normal. Jason’s biological father slept with his mother, but then took off, leaving Jason and his mother alone. His mother would have the neighbors watch Jason during the day, and go out to work in the strip clubs at night. Not much as a child was remembered. Jason would go to school, come home, do homework, chores, and watch a little television, and repeat everything the next day. When he was eleven years old, his mother fell in love with another man; A brigade cop. To Jason, he was sweet, cared about his mother, helped them pay the bills, put food on the table, and moved them into better living conditions. Two years later, they legally married. Things seemed fine at first…

Early History

Jason loved school; especially Marine Biology and Tech Lab. He loved to take things apart and put them back together again, after figuring out how they worked. He did such things often with electronics at home. Once, he took the entire VCR apart and put it back together, and fixed it so that a tape never got stuck in it ever again. Eventually, over time, he began to notice that his ‘parents’ argued a lot. Simple things like noticing they were missing glasses only to find that they were broken days ago, became clear to him. Soon, those arguments became violent. Every time that Jason would bring up the subject, his mother would wave him off, telling him that he was crazy.

On his sixteenth birthday, his step-father would not allow him to have a party, telling him that he would celebrate with his parents instead. Jason, upset, didn’t say anything about it until he got his mother alone, citing that it wasn’t fair that someone who wasn’t biological to him could order him around. His mother told her husband and he confronted Jason, punching him, and breaking his nose. His mother did nothing. When Jason went to the brigade and informed them that his step father was beating him and his mother, they did nothing about it, although telling them that they would. That same night, the beating got worse. Jason couldn’t stand and ended up passing out in his pool of blood.

He begged for his mother to leave her husband, but she wouldn’t. She would tell her son that his step father didn’t mean to hit him so hard or to shout at him and would make excuses. Jason, on the other hand, said otherwise. The last words that Jason’s mother ever said to him were, “If you don’t like it here, then leave, and don’t come back.” And Jason did just that.

Homelessness

Jason packed one backpack, tearfully said good bye to his dog and his life, and left home at the age of sixteen. He had no plan, he had stolen a hundred dollars from his parent’s safe, and he had no real sense of direction. When he left, he was sure that his parents would try to find him by filing a missing person’s report. He would stand outside of stores that had televisions in the window and displayed the news. Not once did his name or picture flash across the screen. After about seven months, Jason reckoned {he lost track of time}, he gave up any hope of being found, and he had run dry of money and food. Though he didn’t feel comfortable stealing, he didn’t know what else to do.

At night, he would break into stores and take things like bread, soup, and water. He would hang around restaurants and wait for them to throw out food so he could eat. He would go into libraries and book stores and hang in the back and read, just so he could teach and educate himself. To pass time, he would dig in trash cans, watch people come and go, and take apart electronical equipment and fix it. He never spoke, he never made eye contact, and he never stole directly from anyone.

Jason would take residence in abandoned buildings that no one was in, making it as homey as he could. All of his collections, items he found in the trash and opted to keep, he would store there. He eventually had old furniture that people would throw out and moved it, himself, into the building, just to create something that resembled a home. It was much better than sleeping on the ground. He would take cloths and stitch them up to make more warm clothes, or less material for the cooler times. Since he had the time, Jason would mix ingredients together that he figured would make something similar to soap. He knew of some of the ingredients from a lab he had conducted in school. He would find such things as oil, salt crystals, butter, and wood that he would use to heat the ingredients, thus making a strong version of soap. Though it didn’t look well, it soaped up, and still provided what other soaps would. However, not much could be applied because it would leave a white residue if not rinsed quickly with cold water. So, when it rained, he would go out with homemade soap and wash himself. When his hair on his face grew too long, he would take a used shaver that he cleaned with alcohol, and shave himself.

Often, when lying down at night, Jason would think to rob a bank. Make a new life for himself, get his education on paper, and get a job. But every time he would pass by one, he couldn’t fathom doing it. He couldn’t make people think that he would harm them just for greed. Instead, he just goes from day to day, keeping up with the papers, the dates, and going by without a word. If Jason ever had a chance, and angel that looked out for him, he was sure that eventually it would be seen and that second chance would be given to him.

Meeting Eden

Jason met Eden, by accident as he would say, when he happened to be walking past as she dropped her cell phone. He had retreived it for her, fixed it as well, and handed it back to her, going on his way. It wasn't until later, where she would wait for him more or less, that she began to befriend him. From this, a friendship began, and Eden came up with a task, more or less, and asked him to room with her in her small apartment. It would give him a second chance, and a chance to get up on his feet and make the life for himself that he wanted in the beginning. Jason, shyly, accepted. A makeover came into play, with her cutting his hair, changing and buying him clothes and shoes, and Jason shaven. Looking a new man, he suddenly went onto the streets with a more clear vision. And all thanks to Eden.
